Even thought is not a trip (it is only 30 minutes away), it is interesting discovering places around our area and painting in them.

Today the place was Fort de Soto, yes there is a real fort, with real cannons. Interesting site seeing place.

But my interest is the beach area, the casuarinas flank the beach and create beautiful patterns of light and shadow over the white sand. There are also sand dunes, small ones.

Today the beach got packed by 10 am. The water was calm and transparent, turquoise green...

Ayampe

We stopped in Montanita a fishermen town, that is frequently visited by europeans and americans due to its pristine beaches, hippie individuals and night parties. Not my kind of town, but the see food is delicious so we decided to stop for brunch and had ceviche.

We headed to Sanlango were we stopped at the town and visit a archeological museum. The picture of my sons shows the Salango Island, it is protected as natural habitat. Puerto Lopez, is only 20 minutes away from Ayampe We had booked a trip to see the humpback whales the next day from Pto Lopez so we wanted to make sure we had the correct directions.

To reach to Puerto Lopez we climb the second arm of the mountain chain and here is a pictures from the very top.

We returned to Ayampe and I was able to make a couple of studies of the big rock formations, they are call the La roca del ahorcado, the hangmen rock. The park is located next to the river, across the city. The tide was really low when I tood the pictures

There are samples of several wood structures that have been taken from the original places at the city and placed at the museum. The flight was uneventful.
My son, who is also painting decided to pack his guerrilla cigar box in his lugage. I took the oil paints in mine. Well his luggage and half of his cloth never made it. American Airline assure the luggage arrived. Maybe, somebody took it by mistake

Lesson learned pack your pochade box in a carry on. Make sure your luggage has good identification tag. You can always find oil painting at your destination but not your equipment.

My 5 weeks trip

In four days I will be taking a flight to South America and I will be spending 5 weeks exploring. I will take my painting gear and try to make the most of this trip.

The painting gear consist of 2 pochade boxes, one 6x8, the other 10x12, a two pound tripod for the bigger pochade box, water based oils, a sketchbook and a mini size watercolour set. I cannot forget my digital camera!

For surfaces I will be taking museum board (4ply) that has been gessoed in both sides. This are sized, 6x8, 8x10, 12x6, 9x12. This surface could also work for pastels but I am still debating taking a small set of pastels with me. Most probably will depend on how much I can fit in my carry on. The paints and palette knives will go on my luggage, the pochade boxes and boards will go on my carry on. I take my pan watercolor set and my brushes in my purse in a brush pack. If I loose my luggage I can still get oil paints where I am going.

Here is the 6x8 pochade box.

Last year some cool paintings came out of this little box, when I visited Switzerland and Italy.

Lake Lucerne

Cinque Terra Pine

I will be updating this blog frequently through my travel and posting pictures and paintings as I go.
